Project Detail

Access Initiative: Ormerod Special School, Oxford and Vukhambe School, Mdantsane, East London

A truly successful visit took place in October 2005 by Clive Peters and Judi Williams, the head teacher and deputy head teacher respectively of the Ormerod Special School in Oxford to the Eastern Cape. The visit has spawned a strong partnership between the Ormerod Special school, Oxford and Vukuhambe Special school for learners with physical challenges in Mdantsane township, and potential links between Oxfordshire’s other special schools and the small number of special schools in the Eastern Cape province.

The programme consisted of a well organised tightly packed series of visits to schools. There were opportunities to work in classrooms and attend workshops with teachers and principles and to gain an insight into the work undertaken, the skills gained and the challenges faced.

Following the visit Clive and Judi prepared a plan for dual support from BEFSA and Oxfordshire County Council to the Eastern Cape special schools. This plan includes:

1. the identification of training packages which are currently available in Oxfordshire, which are easily transferable and can be delivered by Oxfordshire County Council Schools and support staff working in the Physical Disability Service/Down’s Syndrome and Complex Medical Needs Services

2. arranging and facilitating workshops by Oxfordshire County Council teachers at Vukuhambe Special School where the participants include teachers and specialist support staff from the Eastern Cape Special Education Services

3. the purchase of 8 laptops and joysticks including appropriate software for use by Eastern Cape teachers working in the province’s special schools

4. the hosting of Vukuhambe School’s ICT teacher in Oxfordshire to work for one week at the Ace Centre, Oxford. Main focus to be ICT access to the curriculum for physically disabled pupils

5. as a future development, the identification of reciprocal arrangements for Eastern Cape staff to visit England and work alongside Oxfordshire County Council staff
