Project Detail
Shipment of School Furniture and Equipment to Schools in South Africa
The infrastructure for the transfer of school furniture, equipment, computers and books from schools in Oxfordshire to SA is in place. A number of UK and SA organisations and individuals are involved in the transfer. As with previous shipments this shipment is a charitable venture involving a large number of people working in partnership on a voluntary basis to assist with the education transformation of the country. These include Oxfordshire schools, removal firms (loading of the container will be undertaken by a team of people from Nationwide Relocations in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, shipping agents (SA and UK), a shipping company, an NGO and the Eastern Cape Department of Education. The last shipment of 300 boxes of school books were shipped to Port Elizabeth in February 2006. Plater College, an independent catholic secondary school in Oxford has recently closed. All the furniture has been disposed of, but the books have been reserved for schools in SA. There are 300 boxes of school books packed into 20kg boxes. The volume of books equates to 13500 cubic metres which is half a 20 foot container. The shipment has been sent to the Catholic Bishop of Port Elizabeth for distribution around the catholic secondary schools in the Western and Eastern Cape. Through initiatives like this one BEFSA is seeking to close the gap between the schools in the developed world and schools in the rural areas and townships of SA.
